Why should sandstone never be acid washed?
Sandstone contains naturally occurring iron compounds. Hydrochloric acid mobilises them, and as they migrate to the surface and oxidise they produce deep orange-brown staining that is far worse than the original soiling and very difficult to reverse. Acid also attacks the binder holding the sand grains together, leaving a friable, sandy surface. Sandstone should be cleaned with low pressure and pH-appropriate chemistry instead.
