Our home patch

Illawarra

We are based at Warilla, which puts most of the Illawarra inside half an hour. This is the region we work in most weeks of the year, from the escarpment suburbs behind Wollongong to the brand-new estates at Shell Cove and Calderwood.

Where we work across the Illawarra

Wollongong

Wollongong has some of the best older brickwork on the coast and a lot of it has never been cleaned. The double-brick and solid-brick housing through Mangerton, Keiraville, Figtree, Gwynneville and West Wollongong dates largely from the 1920s through the 1960s, and under sixty or eighty years of escarpment rain and coastal grime the brick is usually in far better shape than owners expect..

Shellharbour

Shellharbour is where we are based, near enough — Warilla is the next suburb across. That means no travel loading, quick turnarounds on quotes, and the ability to come back and check a wall once it has dried without it being a production..

Albion Park

Albion Park sits at the centre of the Illawarra’s biggest construction corridor. Between Tullimbar, Calderwood and the ongoing infill through Albion Park and Albion Park Rail, there is a constant stream of new brickwork needing to be cleaned in the right window..

Dapto

Dapto covers a wide spread of housing ages, which makes it one of the more varied areas we work. Kanahooka and Koonawarra are largely 1970s and 80s brick, Horsley and Brooks Reach are recent estate housing, and the older township has established homes on bigger blocks with mature trees..

Kiama

Kiama is the most heritage-sensitive part of the Illawarra we work in. The Terralong Street precinct, the older cottages around the harbour and Blowhole Point, and the churches and public buildings through the town are nineteenth-century masonry that should never see hydrochloric acid or a turbo nozzle..

Shell Cove

Shell Cove is almost entirely new, which makes the work here very specific: new-build brick cleaning in the correct window, efflorescence through the first wet season, and then an ongoing salt problem that is more severe than anywhere else we work..

Local conditions

What the Illawarra does to masonry

01

Salt, constantly

Onshore wind carries salt several kilometres inland. It settles on every surface, holds moisture out of the air, and gives mould and lichen a permanently damp film to live in.

02

Escarpment rainfall and shade

The escarpment lifts moist air and drops serious rain on the suburbs beneath it. South and west elevations under that shadow grow green far faster than the same wall two suburbs east.

03

Two very different housing stocks

Post-war double brick through Wollongong and Port Kembla, and thousands of new brick-veneer homes across Shell Cove, Calderwood, Tullimbar and Flinders. They need completely different treatment.

Quick answer

What does the Illawarra region cover?

The Illawarra is the coastal strip of New South Wales between the Royal National Park and the Shoalhaven, running roughly from Helensburgh in the north through Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama in the south. It sits between the Illawarra escarpment and the Tasman Sea, and that combination of high rainfall, shade from the escarpment and constant salt-laden onshore wind is why masonry here soils, grows lichen and needs washing faster than inland areas.
