Driveway Cleaning

The driveway is the first and largest thing anyone sees when they pull up. It is also the surface most often cleaned badly, because doing it evenly is harder than it looks.

Quick answer

How often should a driveway be cleaned?

Most Australian driveways benefit from a professional clean every 12 to 24 months. Shaded, south-facing and heavily treed driveways need it annually because moss, algae and tannin build faster, while open sunny driveways can stretch further. Regular cleaning also removes the biological growth that makes a wet driveway slippery, which is a genuine safety issue on sloped blocks.

Why driveways end up striped

Cleaning a slab by hand with a lance means every pass has slightly different pressure, distance and speed. The overlaps clean more than the middle of each stroke, and once the concrete dries you get the tiger-stripe pattern that is more noticeable than the dirt was.

A rotary surface cleaner holds the nozzles at a fixed height and rotation speed, so the whole slab receives an identical amount of energy. That is the entire difference between a driveway that looks professionally done and one that looks scrubbed.

What is included

  • Full pre-treatment for moss, algae, lichen and tannin staining
  • Degreasing of oil drips and vehicle marks before pressure
  • Even clean across the whole slab, including edges and the crossover to the kerb
  • Paver joints re-sanded where cleaning has washed out the sand
  • Weeds treated in joints and expansion gaps
  • Paths, steps and the front entry cleaned to match, so nothing looks half done

Pavers and brick paving

Paved driveways need lower pressure and attention to the joints. Blasting at concrete pressure strips the jointing sand, which lets pavers rock, spread and let weeds through. We clean at a pressure the pavers take, then re-sand the joints so the surface stays locked up.

FAQ

Driveway Cleaning — questions we get asked

How much does driveway cleaning cost?

A standard residential driveway usually sits in the low hundreds. The variables are area, surface type, how heavy the moss and oil staining is, and whether re-sanding or sealing is wanted. We quote on the specific driveway rather than a per-square-metre rate, because a shaded mossy one is genuinely twice the work of a clean sunny one the same size.

Will the weeds come back?

Cleaning removes them; it does not stop new seed germinating in the joints. We treat the joints as part of the job, which knocks the regrowth back significantly, and re-sanding paver joints reduces the gap they establish in.

Should I seal my driveway afterwards?

It is worth it on exposed aggregate, stencilled and coloured concrete, where it protects the finish and holds the colour. On plain concrete it is optional — it slows re-staining and makes future cleans easier, but plain concrete cleans up fine without it.
