Same wall, one clean apart
Before and after
The honest test of this trade is the same surface photographed twice. Below are four jobs shot from the same position before and after.
Efflorescence on a brick parapet
White salt bloom across the top courses of a parapet wall. The salts are drawn out of the masonry by water moving through it, so the clean is only half the job — the other half is reporting what is letting the water in.
Scaffolded sandstone arch carrying decades of atmospheric soiling. Sandstone is soft and porous, so this is low pressure and the right chemistry — high pressure would take the face off the stone and cannot be undone.
Mortar smear and cement film over the whole facade at the end of the bricklaying stage. This is the clean that has to happen before handover, and the one that has to be warranty-compliant.
Grime and algae building up on a shaded courtyard wall. Tight access and a fixed unit in the way, which is most of what makes a job like this awkward rather than difficult.
Face brick, glazed brick, feature and heritage masonry, sandstone, roofs and render. Different substrates, different chemistry, same principle.

Some of these were taken years ago on job sites and have been through a few phones since, so a handful are smaller than we would like. They are shown at their true size rather than blown up.
