Our northern edge

Sutherland Shire

The Shire is the northern end of our run and it comes with twenty years of Sydney history behind it — this business worked Sydney for two decades before moving south. Helensburgh and the northern Shire are an easy trip up the coast.

What the Sutherland Shire does to masonry

01

Sydney sandstone country

The Shire sits on sandstone. Retaining walls, garden walls, steps, cliff faces and older buildings are full of it, and it is the surface most commonly ruined by acid and high pressure.

02

Post-war brick everywhere

Vast tracts of 1950s to 1970s brick housing through Engadine, Sutherland, Miranda and Gymea. Solid brick, often never cleaned, and usually far better underneath than owners expect.

03

National Park shade, ocean salt

Helensburgh and the southern fringe are bushland-shaded and damp; Cronulla and the coastal strip take full ocean exposure. Two different problems within twenty minutes.

Quick answer

What suburbs are in the Sutherland Shire?

The Sutherland Shire is the southernmost local government area of metropolitan Sydney, bounded by the Georges River to the north and the Royal National Park to the south. Its main centres include Sutherland, Miranda, Cronulla, Caringbah, Engadine and Menai, with Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Tops sitting south of the National Park on the way into the northern Illawarra.
