What causes white streaks running down apartment balconies?
White streaks running down balcony soffits and precast panels are usually calcium carbonate, also called lime run. Water moving through the concrete dissolves free lime, carries it to the surface, and it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form a hard, insoluble crust. It generally indicates a failed or bypassed waterproof membrane or blocked drainage, so removing the deposit without addressing the water path means it reforms.
