Quick answer
How much does it cost to clean brickwork in Australia?
Brick cleaning is quoted per job rather than at a fixed rate, because price is driven by elevation area, brick type, the age and hardness of the mortar residue, access, and whether stain remediation is involved. A standard new-home clean is materially cheaper per square metre than remediating a decades-old wall or reversing a failed acid clean. Most accredited operators will quote from photographs without charging for an inspection.

Cost & quoting
How much does brick cleaning cost?
It is quoted per job. The drivers are elevation area, brick type, how hard the mortar residue has cured, access and whether there is stain remediation involved. A new-home clean is a straightforward job; a sixty-year-old wall under escarpment shade with lichen through it is not. Send photos and rough dimensions and we will give you a number.
How much does pressure cleaning a driveway cost?
Most residential driveways sit in the low hundreds. The variables are area, surface type, how heavy the moss and oil staining is, and whether you want paver joints re-sanded or the slab sealed afterwards. A shaded mossy driveway is genuinely about twice the work of a sunny one the same size.
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Most jobs are priced from photos. Where it needs an in-person look, that is free too.
Can you price from photos?
Usually yes. Two or three clear daylight photos — one close to the surface, one of the whole elevation — plus approximate dimensions is normally enough. Photos taken in direct hard sun or at dusk hide a lot, so overcast light is ideal.
New brickwork & builders
How long after bricklaying should bricks be cleaned?
Usually 7 to 14 days. The mortar must be cured enough that acid will not erode the joints, but not so old that the cement film has fully hardened onto the brick. Both extremes cause problems.
Who is responsible for cleaning brickwork on a new build?
It depends on the contract. On most volume builds the builder engages the brick cleaner, and on some the bricklaying contractor includes it in their scope. Either way, if it is done badly the defect lands with the builder before handover, which is why accreditation is worth checking rather than assuming.
What is the white bloom all over my new house?
Almost certainly efflorescence — soluble salts brought to the surface as construction moisture dries out. It is normal on new masonry and very treatable. What matters is whether it keeps returning after cleaning, because that points to an ongoing water path.
Acid, damage & stains
Will acid damage my bricks?
Correctly diluted acid on a saturated wall, properly rinsed, will not damage sound brickwork. Damage comes from acid on dry brick, over-strength mixes, excessive dwell time, inadequate rinsing, or using acid at all on brick carrying vanadium or manganese.
My bricks turned brown after cleaning — what happened?
On cream or light brick, almost certainly vanadium that has been converted by acid. On dark or charcoal brick, almost certainly manganese dissolved out of the brick face and run down the wall. Manganese is usually treatable. Acid-converted vanadium generally is not.
Can acid burn be repaired?
It can usually be improved, sometimes substantially, and only occasionally reversed completely. The most effective step on light burn is cleaning the entire elevation correctly so the damage stops reading as patches. Eroded joints need repointing, which is bricklaying rather than cleaning.
Why does the stain keep coming back?
Because the cause has not been dealt with. Efflorescence and calcium mean water is still moving through the masonry. Rust means the iron source is still there. Mould and lichen mean the surface is still damp and shaded. Cleaning treats the symptom; the wall needs the cause fixed too.
Method & surfaces
What is the difference between pressure washing and soft washing?
Pressure washing uses high water pressure to mechanically remove what is sitting on a surface. Soft washing uses low pressure — under about 500 psi — with a biocidal detergent that kills mould, algae and lichen at the root. Soft washing is the correct method for render, painted surfaces, cladding, timber and roof tiles.
Can you pressure clean a roof?
You can, and you should not. High pressure strips the tile surface coating, forces water under the laps into the roof cavity, and dislodges ridge pointing. Roofs are soft washed and treated.
Will cleaning make my surfaces slippery?
The opposite. Most outdoor slip risk is biological film rather than the surface itself, so cleaning improves it substantially. Where a surface still fails, an anti-slip treatment can be applied.
Do you need to use my water and power?
An outside tap is ideal and uses far less water than people expect. Where there is no supply, or where runoff must be captured for compliance, we bring our own tank and containment.
Booking & practicalities
How long does a job take?
A residential driveway is usually a couple of hours. A house exterior soft wash is most of a day. A full new-home brick clean is typically a day. Whole-property cleans and remediation work run one to two days. Heritage and poultice work takes longer because the chemistry needs dwell time.
Do I need to be home?
Not usually, as long as we have access and an outside tap. Holiday homes and investment properties are cleaned unattended all the time, and we send before-and-after photos.
Is it safe for plants and pets?
With the right precautions, yes. Garden beds are wet down before and after, sensitive planting is covered, and runoff is directed away. We ask that pets stay inside until the final rinse is done.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is not usually a problem and on some jobs it helps. Heavy rain during acid work or a soft wash reduces dwell time and washes chemistry off before it has worked, so we reschedule rather than deliver a compromised result.
