Fast response, substrate-safe

Graffiti Removal

Graffiti on non-porous surfaces is straightforward. Graffiti on brick, render and sandstone is a genuine specialist job, because the paint has soaked into the substrate and blasting it out takes the substrate with it.

Quick answer

How is graffiti removed from brick without damaging it?

On porous masonry, graffiti is removed with a solvent-based remover or a poultice that draws the pigment back out of the pores, rather than by abrasive blasting which strips the fired brick face. The remover is applied, given dwell time, agitated and then flushed at low to moderate pressure. Fast removal matters — aged paint bonds harder and UV drives pigment deeper, so removal within days is far more successful than months later.

Why speed matters

Aerosol paint continues curing and bonding for weeks after it is applied, and UV drives the pigment deeper into porous surfaces. A tag removed within a few days generally comes off cleanly. The same tag left for six months on brick or sandstone may only ever be reduced to a shadow.

There is also the well-documented pattern that a tagged wall attracts more tagging. Fast removal is cheaper than repeated removal.

Method by surface

  • Face brick and block — solvent remover or poultice, low-to-moderate pressure flush. No grit blasting.
  • Render and painted walls — often best over-coated to a control joint or corner, since removal will disturb the existing paint anyway.
  • Concrete — solvent and pressure, generally very recoverable.
  • Sandstone and heritage masonry — poultice work exclusively, applied and drawn out over hours rather than minutes.
  • Metal, glass, Colorbond and signage — solvent wipe, careful not to haze or scratch the finish.

Anti-graffiti coatings

On repeat-target walls a protective coating pays for itself quickly. Sacrificial coatings sit on the surface and are washed off with hot water taking the paint with them, then reapplied. Permanent coatings stay in place and allow repeated cleaning without reapplication. Which one suits depends on the substrate, the appearance you can accept and how often the wall is hit.

FAQ

Graffiti Removal — questions we get asked

Can graffiti be removed from brick completely?

On sound face brick and if it is dealt with promptly, usually yes. Very porous or heavily weathered brick, and paint that has been on for months, sometimes leaves a faint shadow. We will tell you what to expect from photos before we quote.

Do you do ongoing removal for commercial or strata sites?

Yes. Standing arrangements with agreed response times are common for retail strips, industrial estates, strata buildings and rail-adjacent walls, and are considerably cheaper than one-off callouts.
