Quick answer
Why should heritage brick never be acid washed or sandblasted?
Hand-made and early machine-pressed bricks have a dense fired outer skin that protects a much softer body underneath. Sandblasting removes that skin permanently, leaving an absorbent surface that grows moss, spalls and decays rapidly. Hydrochloric acid dissolves lime mortar far faster than it cleans brick, eroding joints that were deliberately made softer than the brick so the joint sacrifices itself rather than the unit.
